5 Stars for Madness by Catherine Winters

Currently her only non-vampire novel.

Notes

Catherine didn't really know about autism, let alone that she was autistic, when she wrote her novels, so it's never mentioned, but characters often have autistic traits if you know what to look for. While there is a nice story on top of it all, her novels are really asking, "what does it mean to be human?" Because humans, how do they work?

She enjoys efficiency of word, so you'll not find a lot of extra description in her stories. That makes them relatively quick reads, even for a slow reader like me. However, she also doesn't rehash what happened in previous books, so if you're reading a series, you'll have to keep track yourself.

Nor will Ms. Winters lead you by the nose to any conclusions; you have to make your own. Moral ambiguity is her bread and butter, preferring to write complex people who embody both positive and negative aspects. And "happy for now" is the best ending you'll get, because every story is just a part of a larger one where the world keeps moving.
