This is a phenomenal drama wearing the clothes of an adventure/action movie. Sure, the title suggests that the movie may be campy like Army of Darkness or silly like Monty Python and the Holy Grail. However, the title is a ruse!
Wonderfully written and brilliantly executed, this movie has all the beauty and poignancy of Unforgiven or Gran Torino. Like an ogre, this movie has so many layers that I might look to see if there is good film analysis on YouTube or Nebula. There’s loss and grieving, complex trauma, what is success, what is a monster, etc. I didn’t get what I expected, and I’m glad, because what I got was so damn good.
If you’re the kind of person that wants a neat, clean, linear story, you’d best skip this one. The tale jumps back and forth between the main character’s present (1987) and various points in his past. Although they don’t explicitly tell you where you are in the story, I never found it difficult to keep up with. Each scene gives contextual information allowing you to place it chronologically. And the delivery: chef’s kiss.
And don’t read any plot summaries, especially the one on Wikipedia which I think really delivers the key points of the movie is the most disappointing way possible. I think that experiencing the move the way I did, really allowed it to shine. Just jump in and enjoy. I highly recommend.
